Guidance

The government announced £1 billion of funding to support children and young people to catch up lost time after school closure. This is especially important for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds.

 

Mainstream schools have been allocated £80 for each pupil in from reception to year 11 inclusive.

 

Similar to the pupil premium, schools should use the sum available to them as a single total even though funding is calculated on a per pupil or per place basis. Funding will only be available for the 2020 to 2021 academic year and will not be added to schools’ baselines in calculating future years’ funding allocations.

Context

On 20th March 2020, The government suspended the National Curriculum and closed schools and nurseries to all but the children of critical workers and vulnerable children. The guidance was clear that if children could be at home, they should.

At St Edmund Campion, we had approximately ten-fifteen children attending each day with twenty on the register.

 

From June 1st, as instructed by the government, we were able to welcome back certain year groups:

  • our nursery and reception children on a week on/week off rota.
  • 48 Year 1 children
  • 59 Year 6 children
  • 60 children of critical workers and vulnerable children

The school closure to so many children, meant that around 210 of our (2019-20) children missed about fourteen weeks of formal schooling. Children had very different experiences of lockdown and it important to give careful consideration to how the C19 Catch Up Premium and indeed the wider school budget is allocated in 2020-21

How Guidance allows Funds to be Spent

EEF Recommendations

Schools should use this funding for specific activities to support their pupils to catch up for lost teaching over the previous months, in line with the curriculum expectations for the next academic year in actions for schools during the coronavirus outbreak.

 

While schools can use their funding in a way that suits their cohort and circumstances, they are expected to use this funding for specific activities which will help pupils catch up on missed education.

 

To support schools to make the best use of this funding, the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has published a coronavirus (COVID-19) support guide for schools with evidence-based approaches to catch up for all students.

The EEF advises the following as approaches to consider:

Split the 60 Y6 children across three classes and qualified teachers in order to best meet the academic and social needs of the cohort.

To ensure StEC has sufficient quantity of books to supply the reception and KS1 children with bundles of carefully matched decodable phonics books home for reading in line with the Risk Assessment ‘resting’ guidelines. Purchase additional books to supplement the current scheme.

The Covid-19 Catch Up Premium forms a contribution to total costs in these key areas.  Actual costs in all areas are far higher and accounted for in the total school budget.
